Understanding Blood Glucose

Key summary

Normal blood glucose means a fasting blood glucose below 100 mg/dL and an HbA1c below 5.7%. A fasting blood glucose of 100–125 or an HbA1c of 5.7–6.4% is prediabetes. A fasting blood glucose of 126 or higher or an HbA1c of 6.5% or higher meets the diagnostic criteria for diabetes (KDCA National Health Information Portal). In Korea, 41.1% of adults aged 30 and older have prediabetes (Korean Diabetes Association 2024).

Understanding Blood Glucose

Blood glucose is the concentration of glucose in your blood. After you eat, blood glucose rises. Then insulin released from the pancreas moves glucose into your cells, and blood glucose comes back down. When this regulation does not work well and blood glucose stays high, it is diabetes.

Between normal and diabetes is prediabetes. It has almost no symptoms and is easy to miss, but it is also the stage when lifestyle management has the greatest effect.

As a rule, a diabetes diagnosis is confirmed by repeat testing on a different day. If a single reading is above the cutoff, get an accurate test at a medical facility.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal fasting blood glucose level?
A fasting blood glucose below 100 mg/dL, measured after fasting for at least 8 hours, is normal. 100–125 mg/dL is impaired fasting glucose (prediabetes), and 126 mg/dL or higher meets the diagnostic criteria for diabetes (KDCA National Health Information Portal).
What is a normal HbA1c level?
An HbA1c below 5.7% is normal, 5.7–6.4% is prediabetes, and 6.5% or higher meets the diagnostic criteria for diabetes. HbA1c reflects your average blood glucose over the past 2 to 3 months.
What is a normal blood glucose level 2 hours after a meal?
On a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test, a 2-hour blood glucose below 140 mg/dL is normal, 140–199 mg/dL is impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes), and 200 mg/dL or higher meets the diagnostic criteria for diabetes.
My fasting blood glucose is 110. Do I have diabetes?
A fasting blood glucose of 110 mg/dL falls in the 100–125 range, which is prediabetes (impaired fasting glucose). It does not meet the diagnostic criteria for diabetes (126 or higher). Because your risk is elevated, however, an HbA1c test, lifestyle management, and regular checkups are recommended.
