Sleep and Stress
Everyday ways to manage your metabolic health
Sleep and Stress
Sleep and rest are when your metabolic rhythm recovers. If you do not get enough sleep, or your sleep is irregular, it can affect appetite control and activity levels and make weight and blood glucose harder to manage.
Chronic stress also tends to lead to overeating, lack of sleep, and less physical activity, so it should be looked at together in managing metabolic health.
Key points to practise
A regular sleep schedule
Go to bed and wake up at about the same time every day.
Enough sleep
Adults should aim for 7 or more hours of sleep a day.
Less screen time before bed
Cut back on smartphone use in bed.
Avoid late-night eating
Avoid overeating and drinking alcohol right before you go to sleep.
Your own way to relax
Ease tension with a light walk, breathing exercises, or stretching.
Ask for help
If sleep problems or low mood continue, talk to a professional.
